Pay – By – Use
Direct user charges for household waste collection service are widely applied internationally, particularly in the context of the financial and environment cost of waste generation and of encouraging waste reduction and recycling. In 2002 it was recognised that waste charge should be based on use and in January 2005 a Pay – by – Use Policy was introduced with a wide variety of systems ranging from tag – a – bag/bin through to on board weighing systems have been put in place.
Waste Reduction Tips to slimming your bin:
There are a number of ways that householders can reduce their waste, some of which are very simple and easy to do for example:
- Avoid excessive packaging. Many products now come with layers of plastic. There are more environmentally friendly alternatives.
- Choose products packaged in materials that can be easily recycled, e.g. glass and tin. Avoid plastic when possible.
- Modern lifestyles have resulted in many disposable products. Choose more durable products that will last. Typical examples would include cutlery, paper plates, napkins, disposable wipes, and razors etc.
- Buy loose fruit and vegetables where possible. Many supermarkets offer pre-packed vegetables. Avoid these and you will avoid the polystyrene.
- Take your reusable shopping bags with you to the shops every trip.
- Use and refill your own durable drinks bottle
